After a short back and forth between two collectors, a buyer giving his orders in London won with a final offer of $ 80 million, a price to which are added fees and commissions, to reach 92 , 2 millions (approximately 76 million euros).
The price is a highest since May 2019 and the 110 million reached by the "Meules" by Claude Monet, at Sotheby's in New York.
It is about nine times the old record for a painting by the Florentine master, set in 2013 by "The Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist," sold for $ 10.4 millions.
The "Young man holding a medallion" represents a young ephebe with long hair. His identity is not known, but specialists believe he may be a close friend of the powerful Florentine Medici family.
Undated, it is believed to have been made between the late 1470s and early 1480s by Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510), born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi.
